The DNA testing process can be confusing and daunting, especially with all the scientific terms and definitions available. Much of the jargon can be impossible for the average person to understand, but here is a simple to follow list of DNA definitions to help you through the process.

What is “DNA”?

DNA, short for deoxyribonucleic acid, is an acid present in all our cells, which manages the way our bodies appear and behave. DNA is like blueprints on how the body works and is inherited from your parents. Every person’s DNA is unique to them. This makes it ideal for identification purposes, whether a vital clue in a police investigation, or proof of paternity in a dubious situation.

What is “Avuncular DNA Test”?

The avuncular DNA test is the process by which a child can test his ‘alleged’ father’s family to determine paternity by testing his siblings in his stead. This type of test is used in circumstances where the father is unable or unwilling to participate in a DNA test. The accuracy is less than that of a standard paternity test (see below) but in conjunction with the mother’s DNA sample, can increase accuracy of results.

What is “Paternity Test”?

A paternity test is now the most commonly used of all DNA tests. A paternity test establishes whether there is a biological relationship between a father and a child. By comparing DNA samples from a mother, father and child, it is possible to determine whether parentage comes from both sides, resulting in a 50/50 genetic split in the child coming from both parents.

What is “Oral Swab”?

An oral swab is the easiest and most effective method of collecting a DNA sample and is usually provided in the DNA test kit you will receive when you order the test. An oral swab is rubbed on the inside of the mouth, against the cheek, scraping cheek cells away that contain genetic material. These swabs are then dried, sealed in envelopes and sent off to a lab for testing. Oral swabs are the preferred samples of labs because they are the easiest and clearest to read and compare.

What is “Chromosome”?

DNA contains chromosomes, of which there are 23 pairs in each cell. The male chromosomal partnership is identified as X and Y; females only contain the X chromosome. This makes it possible to tests male biological relationships through a Y Chromosome test as it is only passed down from father to son.

What is “DNA Testing”?

DNA testing is the term used to explain the entire process of comparing samples of DNA in order to identify individuals in criminal, civil, legal or medical cases. A DNA test can be used to determine paternity, or place a suspect at a crime scene and has proved itself to be a useful tool in catching and convicting criminals, as well as providing peace of mind to many individuals.
